What exactly is
Automotive Management Solutions?
The year was 1991 and the nation was still riding high after the very successful Gulf War. The Lion King, Forest Gump, Ace Ventura, The Little Rascals, and Pulp Fiction were ruling the box offices of America while bands like Ace of Base, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Snoop Dogg, and Greenday, all had hits on the airwaves. But for Terry Hubbard, things were not right.
Terry grew up working on engines with his father in the shops of Cummins, UPS, and others. After so many years under the cars, he was given the opportunity to pull his hands out of the oil and grease and get them into the management and motivating side. In 1982, he opened a small automotive repair facility in Euless, Texas, a then-small suburb right between Dallas and Ft. Worth Texas.
Growth...
Over the course of about 9 years, Terry successfully managed his business, seeing employee records rising from two to fifty-five. He transitioned the shop from a small 2-bay facility, to a full 14 bay, 24hour repair facility. Floor jacks slid to closets as hydraulic lifts took their place.
However, this story would be vastly incomplete and misleading if it hinted that the growth was in any way exponential or even linear. No, just like your business, it added a few employees, and let some go. It added new equipment and left everyone a little hungry for a few months. It constantly struggled, toeing the line between charging Genuinely Fair prices for masterful work and delivering exceptional service, being charitable and giving to the community, all while constantly being eyed by a disgruntled national community of skeptical customers constantly questioning the integrity of auto repair shops nationwide.
The Dos systems of the day just didn't seem to be helping on the paperwork end of the office. Keys temporarily went missing and sometimes things fell thru the cracks. No one owns a business without struggling.
The Change...
Terry felt like a change, and 1991 opened the door. He wanted to do something with the knowledge he had learned thru hard experience. He wanted to help other shop owners with the issues and situations that he had struggled with and, with a mix of dumb-luck and a good office staff, had overcome. He met up with shop owners and showing the benefits of using computers and, in particular, R. O. Writer's business management software to improve their business. But it wasn't simply about selling software.
Technicians don't fix cars with just a screwdriver, or an impact wrench's. Likewise, owners/managers don't fix their business with just a piece of software, or just a good idea. It takes combining the right tools, with the right knowledge and the right friends to ask for help when you're at a loss.
The Opportunity...
Automotive Management Solutions began in 1994 with Terry servicing North and South Carolina and Virginia by walking into shops expecting to help owners and managers run their business better, instead of just walking in to sell a piece of software. Over the years, A.M.S. has grown to be the #1 private distributor of R. O. Writer software in the country.
A year or so after A.M.S. began, Terry walked into a shop in Eden, NC, owned and operated by a pair of brothers, Tim and Mike McCrickard. They both realized exactly how R. O. Writer could help their business grow and began using R. O. Writer. After a few years of exponential growth in their business, the brothers decided to close down their shop and join Terry, showing other shops across the states what they had witnessed first-hand!
With Mike's help, A.M.S. has grown to about 13 employees and over 700 customers over the past 13 years.
